Michael Bevan – Best ODI Finisher (Birthday Special)
Team in trouble, whether 6 wickets down or even 8 wickets and a long way to way…. So what ?… No worries, Michael Bevan is there.
He was most dependable finisher of all time, a reliable anchor at the bottom of the middle order and his partnerships with tail Enders often guided Australia to victory after disastrous collapse of batting order.
It was world cup group league match against England, Aussies were 135-8 and still needed 70 runs to win. Michael Bevan joined the crease with Andi Bichel and finished the game with 2 balls remaining where both Bevan and Bichel remained not out on 74 and 34 respectively. Again in the super six match against New Zealand in the same world cup Bevan scored outstanding 56 and Bichel 64 when score was just 84-7, taking Australia to a respectable total of 208.He also scored valuable 65 runs in memorable world cup semifinal against South Africa in 1999.His one of the most memorable inning came against West Indies at the SCG in 1996 where from 38-6, he single-handedly won the game for his team hitting a boundary off last ball and remained not out on 78.
The list will go longer and longer if we continue discussing his heroics in ODI. But despite being one day specialist, he was not successful in test cricket as he played only 18 matches at a measly average of just 29. It is surprising that he had a blistering test debut where he scored 82 against Pakistan batting at no 5 and finished the series scoring 243 runs in four innings at an average of 60.75.But unfortunately, he was unable to continue scoring at same pace in test and his test career just collapsed.
Great mental strength under tremendous pressure was exceptional quality of Bevan and that’s the reason why his career is decorated with numerous match winning finishes. Ending his career with a batting average of 53.58 — the highest among retired player — in 232 ODIs that fetched 6,912 runs, including six centuries and 46 fifties.
Team Sportzify wishes a bright future and a healthy life to him on eve of his Birthday.
