Medal Expectations in India: 2016 Rio Olympics

The 2016 Rio Olympics has begun with a bang and India is planning to better its 2012 tally of six medals. This would be possible only if India is able to send a contingent of at least 100 athletes. 57 Indians have qualified for the 2016 Olympics, and 32 of them are from Hockey (Men & Women). So ideally, we should have sent a contingent of at least a hundred athletes in 2016.

Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu, Kashyap, Gutta, Ponnapa are really bringing Indian Badminton a good name worldwide. The promises these players hold in the The 2016 Rio Olympics & world circuit is impressive and make people believe. The infrastructure is available and a lot of academies promote Badminton. The IBL has been really successful in bringing new Indian players and exposing them to greater challenges which otherwise would be hard.

The main problem with Hockey is the administration but the team has some quality players. These are players who, if properly nurtured, will grow into great players. The recent Hockey World cup is not a great portrayal of the team and the matches were close but still India could not produce the result they needed. Sugar coating the fact that the team was bad is of no use but what we know is that the Indian Hockey team is good and needs support from administration which has a lot of internal disputes.

After the impressive tally in the London 2012 games, where India managed to bag 6 medals, the Rio games present a great opportunity to reach the double figures and to prove to the world that India is indeed a multi-sport nation. Realistic expectations for medals at the 2016 Olympics are:
