‘Zumba’ – Don’t misunderstand it to be just dancing. Its fitness with a flavor of fun and entertainment.
Ever recall the days when your mother would tell you to stop dancing in front of the mirror and do your homework? Do you remember the stinging humiliation that followed your admittance that you were inspired by the competitive dancing movie series, “Step Up”? Guess what, times have changed and you can have the last laugh. Read on to silence the critics.
“Accident is the name of all the greatest inventors”
Like all great discoveries, Zumba was created by accident. A Colombian trainer forgot to bring his regular aerobics-style music tape to a group exercise class he was teaching. As a substitute, he used cassette tape of Latin dance music. As the lively beats of Merengue and Rumba rang out, he drew upon his experience dancing in Salsa clubs and choreographing for local artists, and needless to say, it was a hit. I thank him not just personally, but professionally (if it were not for him this article could not have been written)
Zumba is not “working out”, it is “working it”
Zumba is not merely an amalgamation of the trifecta of dance, entertainment and exercise. It is not “working out”, it is “working it”. One could describe it as being a slightly choreographed version of a party. No, that is not a typing error (how dare you insult my literary prowess). I mean really, there is dancing, lots of sweaty, upbeat people who are well dressed (yoga pants are now the most fashionable thing in town), and not to forget-is usually less expensive than paying for a similar experience at a night club! You will even find yourself flat on the floor after a Zumba session-though this will be due to exhaustion rather than the alcohol overdose at a party. The only difference is that in this case, it makes no sense to be “fashionably late”.
Zumba dons many hats
It is not possible to be static with such as fun fusion of dance moves from styles like Salsa, Merengue, Reggaeton and Flamenco. Irrespective of form, it can count toward the 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity recommended for most healthy adults. Traditional is not really our style though is it? No worries, the exercise provides many variations, such as Zumba Toning, which is combined with holding light-weights while dancing for extra exertion. There is also Zumba with props, using chairs and short platforms to make a more creative dance routine while adding more avenues for losing weight!
Hotspots in India
Zumba has caught up in all major urban hubs such as Bangalore,Delhi and more so Bombay. The style often overlaps with Bollywood and filmy routines. It is still in a nascent stage in the country, with only around 2000 officially licensed and certified instructors across the country. In early 2015, Zumba’s Colombian creator Alberto Perez trained and certified 500 professionals in his marathon session in Mumbai.
Still not convinced? What if I told you the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Natalie Portman, Victoria Beckham and Shakira take Zumba classes? These celebrities not only love Zumba but advocate it for health and exercise too.Think you’re too much of a masculine, macho-man do you? Guess what, Jackie Chan is a part of the list above as well-and needless to say no body messes with him.
